John Philips Dante’s parentage is unknown since he was left on the front steps of His Merciful Grace Catholic Church in downtown Angel City late one stormy night in September 14, 1986. When Father Philips Blatty found the baby, who was very weak, he quickly took him to a nearby hospital where it was determined that the baby was just a few hours old. There, they also found a strange birthmark on the baby’s nape. The mark resembled a templar cross.
Within a few weeks, the baby was given to the custody of the orphanage which was ran by the same church where he was left.
At the orphanage, the baby was named John Philips Dante; “Philips” in honor of the priest who found him and John, after the doctor who cared for the weak baby . John Philips was given the temporary last name “Dante” since he was born and found on the death anniversary of Father Blatty’s favorite poet of the Middle Ages, Dante Alighieri, who died on September 14, 1321.
John’s upbringing in the orphanage was filled with challenges. Numerous attempts were made to put John up for adoption but inexplicably, all potential parents returned him without any explanation as to why they changed their minds. Even foster care parents did not keep the child for any lengths of time, similarly returning John to the orphanage without an explanation. In time, Father Blatty urged the orphanage to keep and raise John within the protection of the church.
Now at home in the orphanage, John was legally given the last name “Dante”. Although he strived to be accepted, the other orphans kept their distance from him. Eventually he accepted being an outsider. He spent most of his days in the orphanage’s library, learning all he could about the history of Angel City and reading his favorite stories about Templar Knights and their heroic deeds.
After high school, John decided to pursue a career as a police officer. He earned a degree in Criminal Justice and then applied at the prestigious Angel City Police Academy. During his training in the academy, he was disappointed with how officers were being prepared to supposedly protect and serve the public. Deep inside, he felt that he could do more good serving and protecting those in need if he worked on his own. Soon after graduating from the academy, he decided to pursue a career as a private investigator.
Since becoming a private investigator, Dante has found that some of his cases involved fighting creatures from the supernatural realm. Reminiscent of the stories he read of Templar Knights fighting against evil, Dante works as a Shadow Chaser, and has dedicated himself to finding and battling creatures from the supernatural realm while doing what he can to help those in need.
However, he still does the available “natural” world cases. After all, a P.I. still has to somehow make a living.
